THE CUNNING LITTLE VIXEN
Role:
Stage-director
Producer:
Dutch National Touring Opera
Material:
Príhody lisky Bystrousky (1923), an opera in three acts by Leos Janácek (1854-1928), in a new Dutch sung translation by Jibbe Willems.

“The Cunning Little Vixen of the Reisopera is a musical declaration of love. […] You could feel the love for nature in this production.”

“In the staging of Rennik-Jan Neggers […], the animal world is a joy to behold: very stylised and yet playful.”

“…the chickens dressed in lavish white tulle and their typically jerky head movements are a comical highlight.”
In The cunning little Vixen, we follow the story of the Cunning Fox and the Forester, in which the influence of humans on nature plays a particularly important role. The humans in the piece aggressively interfere in the the forest world, affecting the animals that live within it and sparking friction. The story is really about the balance that must be found between humans and nature and the challenges that this entails. This balance is represented in this production by making the humans and the animals equals, co-existing in the forest world, allowing the audiences to identify as much with the animals as with the alienated humans.
There is an important lesson from Janáček in the opera about restoring that relationship between humans and nature. The Cunning Little Vixen teaches us, that nature has the power to regenerate itself, as long as humans manage to find a balance.

“The audience gratefully rewarded the artistic team for this visually stunning production.”

“This is one of the reasons for the success of this opera: the imaginative setting.”

“The production is a pure delight for all the senses, and the 105 minutes fly by.”
