Le Bal Masqué, by Francis Poulenc (1899-1963)
Le Bal Masqué is a ‘fusion’ opera about a woman who learns the hard way that the line dividing expectations and illusions is as thin as paper. Opera, mime and masks get combined with the music of Francis Poulenc and texts by Max Jacob.
In Le Bal Masqué the Host organises a masked ball, but none of her invited guests show up. Together with the two performers she booked as entertainment, she waits for her company in vain. The performers need to kill some time in order to get their fee and out of boredom they decide to improvise some scenes. Without having a say in the matter, the Host becomes part of the improvisations and gets confronted with her own hypocrisy. It heralds the death of keeping up appearances in favour the celebration of eccentricity.
